Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
The company was founded in 1997 as a part time, side business. By late 1999, it was determined that there was a need for full time specification consulting, so in early 2000, McCarty Group president, Dean E. McCarty, decided to leave his position and start full time consulting.
What is your primary product or service?
McCarty Group's primary service is architectural and building product specifications. We work with architects to product project manuals for construction projects; we work with them to produce or update their office master specifications; and we produce product guide specifications for building product manufacturers.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Mr. McCarty had been in architectural drafting since early 1984. Having moved to the Twin Cities in 1988 from South Dakota, he began working for local firms, mainly doing drafting. After a couple of temporary positions, and one firm closing, he decided he needed to find relevant work he could do as a consultant.
In 1991, after starting another drafting job for a large food wholesaler's architectural department, Mr. McCarty became aware of project specifications. Over the next couple of years, he got involved with a trade industry, and learned that there were not many specification writers in the industry. He took the next few years to obtain his bachelor's degree, get more project experience at two other large architectural firms, and started getting requests to write project specifications "on the side." That lead to the full time consulting noted previously.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Let's just say that the typical specification writer/consultant is more "engineer" than "architect." More structured and methodical than creative and outgoing. Mr. McCarty took opportunities to advertise, do email blasts, make many cold calls to generate business, much more than his peers. That is what sets McCarty Group apart.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
There is only the one office at this time. In 2008, McCarty Group saw a tremendous rise in project contracts. We had to be careful on what projects we took, and how many. The reason is there are not many other specifiers. During the boom times of the early 2000's, there were literally no other spec writer's available in order to expand.
But in 2009-2010, as the housing bubble started its decline, colleagues were getting laid off making them available to work with me. Mr. McCarty's goal at that time was to keep the large workload coming in, hire a specification writer and assistant, and "go for it."
Unfortunately, as the economy worsened, and architectural firms started laying off by the dozens as their projects went on hold, business for McCarty Group felt the results and ended up not growing as planned.
Now, in the second half of 2011, the projects are once again starting to come in, marketing efforts have been renewed, and company growth are is becoming a reality.
What type of payments do you accept?
McCarty Group only accepts checks at this time.
Which areas do you service?
McCarty Group has the ability (thanks to electronic media and the Internet) to provide services anywhere in the country. The majority of business is in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, and expansion into Chicago began three years ago.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Dean E. McCarty, CCS, SCIP, CSI, is president, owner, and only employee at this time. He is chief cook and bottle washer, a man of many hats.
What are your hours of operation?
Hours of operation? How many hours are there in a day? Being a project based business, we work until projects are completed. Clients call and email in the morning hours and late into the night. We can also always be reached anytime via the company website, www.mccartygroup.com/contact.html.
